We are a Western Rite Orthodox community embracing the Orthodox legacy of these lands and blessed by the intercessions of the host of local Saints. Our community shares the rich treasures of Orthodox Christianity with people of diverse nationality, language, age and race into the life that has been proclaimed in our Church for more than 2,000 years.
We are under canonical protection of the Orthodox Catholic Church of France. Orthodox in the sense of being part of the great Orthodox Church, however, specifically in England using traditional English forms of worship. We hold strongly to the entire teachings of the Orthodox Church without any deletions or additions, living Orthodox tradition which proclaims the one Truth in the multitude of forms. Catholic in its original meaning that is the fullness of Truth, the fullness resides everywhere in the universe. The part having as much value as the whole, the smallest Church is fully the Church of Christ.
The Orthodox Church throughout the world is overwhelmingly Byzantine in its worship. Therefore orthodoxy is both universal and local, and concerns every nation. Since the first half of the twentieth century the Orthodox Church in Western Europe has been restored, initiated in France with the blessing of other Orthodox Churches, with the capacity of extension towards other countries in Europe and in the world. Thus, our Western Rite parish is the seed of the future Orthodox Church of England, the English expression of traditional orthodoxy, establishing a Western Rite Orthodox vicariate in England carrying on from the Orthodox Church which existed in the British Isles for a full thousand years up until the Norman invasion of 1066 which brought the Great Schism to these shores.
We celebrate the Divine Liturgy of Saint Germain of Paris, a pan-European rite having been used in the Orthodox Catholic Church of France since the sixth century and its restoration in the twentieth century. We also occasionally use the much longer Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, both in English.
Clergy joining this vicariate shall be required to swear adherence to the Ecumenical Councils, Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed and loyalty to the Ordinary Bishop of this vicariate.
